Reggie's Friends

Strolling through a Fall festival, I was taken aback when someone called out, "Hey, aren't you Reggie's Mom?!" It's quite amusing and somewhat surreal how having a popular dog on Facebook can turn you into a local celebrity. Our journey with Reggie, our lovable deaf pit bull whom we adopted in 2011, led us to create a Facebook page for him.

This opened a doorway into the expansive world of animal welfare and rescue. Inspired by this newfound passion, we founded a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, through which we have had the privilege of rescuing over 2,000 animals, each one capturing a piece of our hearts.

In my role as the Rescue Director, the learning curve was steep but incredibly rewarding. I honed the ability to make swift decisions, juggle logistical challenges, manage finances, and maintain emotional resilience. Rescue work demands a delicate equilibrium, necessitating collaboration and strong partnerships with other organizations. Building enduring relationships with fellow rescue groups has been crucial in addressing the significant challenge of animal overpopulation that is particularly prevalent in the South.

Leading Reggie's Friends has been an extraordinary journey. It has brought me immense joy, tested my limits, and introduced me to some incredible individuals. This experience has been my most profound "on-the-job" training. It has sculpted me into someone who is calculated, thoughtful, and action-driven, qualities that I cherish and continue to apply in all aspects of my life.

As my full-time career has evolved, we have dialed back our street rescue efforts and I have put my time and expertise into assisting other groups with invaluable community spay/neuter/vaccination events. These events literally take a village and require strong interpersonal skills to navigate fast-paced and often very chaotic days.

Pack Life

The byproduct of a life in Rescue is that we have this wild, fun, pretty random permanent pack now! The dogs all have their own personalities, but they all love DONUT DAY!

Stubborn Dogs, Stubborn Mom

Rescue takes a lot of patience and makes you VERY good at logistics! The first thing you learn is that street dogs are 1000x smarter than you are, so often there is a lot of planning that has to go into a street rescue. While some dogs are very cooperative, they are ready to get off the streets, other dogs present a bit more of a ... challenge!

In the Summer of 2020, we spotted a pack of 9 dogs roaming in a nearby neighborhood and we would embark on a ~5 month journey to get them all to safety. I am pretty stubborn and when I commit to getting a dog to safety, I stick it out! Never in my wildest dreams did I think this pack would be so SMART and UNCOOPERATIVE!

In the end, we saved the entire pack, plus an extra dog that showed up at some point, and then we got a surprise... two pregnant mommas that gave us SEVENTEEN puppies!

Saving Steve!

Steve the Dog entered our lives when we had decided to "take a break" - everyone in rescue knows when you put out to the universe that you are "taking a break" the universe laughs and drops a dog in your path. I kept seeing posts on our local neighborhood page about this skittish, skinny dog with a skin condition lingering near a busy and hazardous intersection. I tried to just "let it go" and then thought to myself, "I'll just go and see if I can spot him..." And that's often how the most of the dogs we have saved came into our lives. I'll just go and see ...

On the first day of my search, I waited for about 20 minutes, and just as I was about to leave, Steve popped out from a cluster of trees. In that moment, I knew he was meant to be my next rescue mission. He was so sad looking, I knew I couldn't just leave him out there. It took a few attempts, but with the help of some stinky sardines, he finally saw things my way. That day marked the beginning of his life as Steve the Dog.

Steve was not originally intended to be a permanent addition to our pack. But I found myself completely smitten with this sweet, fluffy boy. It became clear that Steve wasn't just a temporary guest, he was staying!

Selfies with Dogs!

I basically love ALL THE DOGS! The happy ones. The sad ones. The silly ones. The scared ones. The sick ones. The fat ones. The skinny ones. The athletic ones. The couch potatoes. I am pretty sure I have never met a dog I didn't love and didn't want to take a selfie with. Rescue gifted me with purpose when I was struggling to find one and I never knew how good stinky street dogs would be for my soul!

The Empty Shelter Project

5x a year, I have the pleasure of volunteering my logistics expertise to help with one of my favorite initiatives, The Empty Shelter Project TESP provides *free* spay & neuter clinics to low income neighborhoods - it is a vital program in helping fight the massive animal overpopulation issue we face in TX. TESP uses community spaces like schools and community centers to build out a full surgical clinic. We start with an empty space and within 8 hours build out kennel, surgery and recovery areas for the ~500 dogs and cats that receive care on a typical clinic day.

On clinic days, the organization provides free sterilization surgeries, vaccinations, and microchips to owned family pets with the goals of helping end the cycle of unwanted litters, reducing the number of animals in shelters, and keeping family pets healthy!

There are so many amazing volunteers involved in Empty Shelter days and many moving parts - I'm so thankful I get to be a part of this amazing organization!
