Proof of Concept
When the COVID-19 pandemic and widespread lockdowns kept families at home for extended periods, residential pool installations soared. Consumers not only made substantial investments in their properties but also drove up demand for pool supplies.
Read on to discover how our in-depth analysis of Leslie’s Pool Supply leveraged proprietary in-field data collection, custom interviews with pool industry experts, and comprehensive public data to provide a complete picture of this rapidly evolving market.
The Project
The surge in pool installations during the pandemic presented a unique opportunity to integrate multiple data streams into a comprehensive narrative of the pool industry. Through our multi-layered approach, we investigated real-time field data at Leslie’s Pool Supply, exploring questions such as whether stock levels could keep pace with traffic, if sell-through rates were outstripping deliveries, and whether traffic and conversions were rising in regions with increased pool installation permits.
Meanwhile, monthly in-depth interviews with industry experts provided insights into chlorine shortages, the potential impact on pricing, and broader supply chain challenges. By combining these findings with pool permit data dating back to 2010, we gained a clear, holistic view of the industry’s massive growth—from consumers to builders to suppliers.
Multiple Data Streams
In-Field Data Collection
In-Depth Industry Expert Interviews
Public Information Data
-
Recorded the number of shoppers and buyers at stores across the country
-
Collected inventory levels in key categories like Chemicals and Equipment
-
Gathered promotional details across key categories
Outcome
-
Regional traffic patterns that could be correlated with permit data (public information data) were identified
-
Delivery and sell-through patterns, and inventory shortages, could be tied to learnings from in-depth expert interviews
-
Promotional cycles and discount rates lent themselves to predictive analysis
Method
-
Developed SEC complaint interview guides for experts across the industry
-
Conducted monthly 1:1 interviews with builders, wholesalers, suppliers, and maintenance professionals and produced detailed transcripts
Outcome
-
Timely information from current industry experts that informed in-field data and analysis
-
Monthly calls fostered strong relationships and offered deeper access to experts’ insights, giving our clients a clear advantage in understanding current industry trends and challenges.
Method
-
Gathered 12-years of pool installation permit data from over 130 key US markets
-
Replicated data collection every quarter and constructed custom visualizations to track Longitudinal, QoQ, and YoY growth
Outcome
-
Produced thousands of data points that correlated to in-field traffic data and expert interviews
-
Allowed for time-series analyses and provided a visual representation of where pool permits were growing, and as the impact of the pandemic started to diminish, where demand began to soften
